Lamu women representative Ruweida Obo and 14 others are suffering from injuries after the boat they were traveling in overturned.
The team, which included government officials, was on its way to an outreach event on Amu Island where they were to meet with regional heads.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, December 28, Obo noted that the boat capsized after hitting a rock in the Belt Canal.
Three of the occupants then fell into the Indian Ocean, but fortunately no one was killed.
Obo noted that the group had left Mtangawanda on Pate Island, but the captain lost control of the boat and hit a rock at the crash site.
“We are all fine, just a few injuries, but we have lost a lot of valuable equipment and some that have been damaged by the water,” he told Citizen TV.
The 15 people were rushed to Lamu County Hospital where they are receiving treatment.
Odo is an experienced captain who has tested senior politicians in the country including Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga, Senator Siaya James Aggrey Orengo and Governors Hassan Ali Joho of Mombasa and Anyang Nyong’o from Kisumu.
