Demonstrations in Matunda as matatu ran over a student.

Violence erupted yesterday in Matunda, Likuyani sub-county, when angry residents cut off part of the Kitale-Eldoret road protesting the death of a 17-year-old boy who had been knocked down by a three-year-old giant.

The second year a Matunda high school student was cycling to school when he was run over and killed at the Furfurral shopping center around 6.30am. The vehicle, registration number Toyota Hiace KCL 563A, is owned by Mwakamo Sacco. Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Ayub Ali said the trio were trying to find another when he ran to the boy.

“The car , lost control and rolled over landing on its side. The victim died instantly, ”Ali said.

In the ensuing protests, rioters destroyed a car and turned on traffic lights while demanding action against a three-wheeler. It took hours of riot police to calm the situation.

Some residents, who spoke to the Nation, said they suffered multiple road injuries.

Mr Geoffrey Simiyu, the boda boda operator at the shop, said, “This is not the first time. Many people have been hit by cars. At least two people are being harassed every month.

“Speed bumps should be put in the our roads, if not we are going to handle the matter by ourselves”

One resident Rajab Shaban said: “We complained to our leaders but nothing was done. The people killed on this road are countless.

Police transported the body to the mortuary of Kitale County Referral Hospital. The victim’s car and bicycle were towed to the Matunda police station.
