I’m shocked – Mike Sonko breaks silence on the US ban

This is a strategic political move to silence me and thwart my political ambitions, former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said of his ban on entering the United States.

The response came just hours after the United States declared him and his family to be ordinary people in the United States.

“Why Sonko, why now, several months before the general election? It is with surprise and disbelief that I heard the news,” he said.

“I will never be intimidated. Am I the only politician facing corruption in Kenya?”

In a statement Tuesday, Sonko said he was surprised by the decision and linked it to politics.

“The decision was undoubtedly politically motivated by my political opponents depriving me of my right as a Kenyan citizen to prove my innocence,” he said.

Sonko said he had not been convicted by Kenyan courts in the case in question.

“… so it leaves me with more questions than answers about what the US State Department is aware of in the outcome of my case,” he said.
