Businessman Jimi Wanjigi challenged ODM party leader Raila Odinga to publicly announce his candidacy for the presidency. Wanjigi at a press conference on Saturday said Raila would have to prove he would be on the ballot in the 2022 elections.

"Our party leader must now prove that he is a player. As soon as he proves he will know that he cannot be a player, captain, referee and VAR all at the same time. I don't know why they are scared," Wanjigi said.

He said that once Raila announces his position, they agree to play fair within the party. "We can even organize party debates. Parties must belong to the people. They are not stalls," he said.

ODM threatened to punish members who open party offices without the consent of the national office in a move that appears to be targeting Wanjigi. In a statement issued by General Secretary Edwin Sifuna on Wednesday, the party warned that such measures would now lead to disciplinary action. Sifuna issued the warning after a meeting of the party's decision-making council, the Central Committee, ended with party leader Raila Odinga.

"We have received alarming reports of some party members claiming to have opened an office at the station without mentioning or consulting with the national office," Sifuna said. "We remind all members that whenever there is a need to open a party office, the same should be done in consultation with the national office whose offices will not be recognized," he added.
