Kenya Covid cases hit 189,703 as positivity rate jumps to 13.1pc

As of Tuesday, 1,067 patients had been hospitalized while 4,359 were treated at home.

Kenya on Tuesday reported another 761 Covid-19 cases out of 5,794 samples tested in the past 24 hours.

The preferential rate increased from 8% the previous day to 13.1%, as the number of confirmed cases jumped to 189,703 and the number of trials conducted so far is 2,023,807.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the newest patient was six months old and 96 years old, while 727 were Kenyans and 34 foreigners, 381 women and 380 men.

Nairobi registered 189 new infections followed by Kisumu and 133, Laikipia 104, Uasin Gishu 45, Nakuru 35, Mombasa 35, Kiambu 27, Kitui 23, Garissa 20, Kilifi 18, Siaya and Taita Taveta 14 each, Murang’a and Machakos eight each, and Isiolo seven.

Vihiga followed by seven new infections followed by Kirinyaga, Makueni, Kisii and Kwale and six each, Bungoma, Kericho and five Nyamira each, Embu, Homa Bay, Kajiado, Kakamega, Narok and Nyandarua two each, and Nyeri, Baringo, Bomet, Elgeyo Marakwet and Meru one each.

In a statement to newsrooms, the ministry further stated that Covid-19 killed nine other people, bringing the death toll to 3,732. However, all of these were late reports confirmed after the inspection establishment files in April and June.

CS Kagwe also announced that 71 patients had recovered from the disease, 45 of whom had been isolated from home care and 26 at health facilities across the country, bringing the total to 180,624.

Oxygen crisis strikes Vihiga after the plant fails

As of Tuesday, 1,067 patients had been hospitalized while 4,359 were treated at home.

Of those hospitalized, 123 were in intensive care, 38 of whom were on respiratory support, 65 on oxygen supplementation and 20 under observation.

Another 218 patients were excluded from excess oxygen, 196 of them in the general wards and 22 in the dependency units.

As of Tuesday, 1,550,389 doses of vaccine had been used nationwide – the first 1,028,669 doses and the second 521,720 doses.

The sucking rate for the second dose was 50.7%, with recipients listed as 161,165 people aged 58 and over, 99,289 health workers, 72,294 teachers, 41,207 security officers and 147,765 people.
