Modern Coast Transport and Transport Company reported a serious accident that caused a bus en route to Mombasa to catch fire on Monday afternoon, December 28th.
According to the operator, the bus had left Mumias for Mombasa when the incident took place along the Chavakali-Kapsabet road.
Contrary to reports on social media, the bus did not crash but crashed into a section that had been reduced after two sedans collapsed.
As the driver left the scene of the accident, the modern coastal bus hit a hole that caused a small fire due to friction.
However, the situation worsened quickly after the fire affected gasoline spilled during an accident involving the two sedans.
“The bus was equipped with a 20-kilometer dry powder fire extinguisher that was suitable for the combustion of solids and liquids, however, workers could not afford a large fire ignited by the spill of gasoline. One of the vehicles,” a logistics company statement read. .
Fortunately, the driver rushed to alert the passengers, who were all rescued quickly to safety. They were then transferred to another bus to continue their journey to Mombasa.
The Deputy Regional Manager, Clarence Iyamba, confirming the incident, complained that poor road conditions had contributed to the accident and a series of other unreported accidents.
Residents have called on the government to repair the pothole-filled highway.
The incident came just days after a tragic accident that claimed the lives of four family members who were traveling from Mombasa to their Kisii home on Christmas day.
In the crash, six people died instantly, one died from his injuries and two others were hospitalized in critical condition.
