East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Florence Jematia Sergon has been arrested.
The MP was arrested by detectives at her home in Langata on Wednesday, February 2. The MP was wanted for what was described as incitement to violence.
The MP had been quoted as threatening to buy guns for her supporters in Baringo County to avoid bandits who have been a security threat in the area.
She is currently being treated at the Nairobi Regional Police Station.
Jematia had been summoned to record a statement after her feelings were criticized by Kenyans on social media as well as leaders in the area.
Baringo County Commissioner Abdirizak Jaldesa said two other local politicians who were also present at the meeting recorded the statement.
“The MP hid after calling him to appear before the committee. We have enough evidence to charge him with inciting violence, ”Jeldesa said.
The area has been plagued by frequent attacks by bandits who have injured and killed dozens.
“They (the police) are well protected and they even have helmets. We are tired of asking for protection,” Jematia said during the meeting.
His remarks were also criticized by several politicians who called for the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (CNIC) to intervene.
“This is an EALA MP who is calling on the people of Baringo to buy guns and ammunition. Hon. Jematia is very bowed. and the leader of West Pokot. of the majority in the Senate, announced Samuel Poghishao, accusing the deputy.
Homa Bay Town MP George Kaluma also condemned the incident, saying the EALA MP had “taken the joke too seriously”.
