Malawi police have arrested a nurse at Ntcheu District Hospital for allegedly insulting President Lazarus Chakwera.
Deputy national police spokesman Harry Namwaza said Ms Chidawawa Mainje, 39, who has since been charged with cyberbullying, was arrested on Saturday after allegedly insulting the president on WhatsApp.
The nurse is accused of insulting the president after a debate erupted on WhatsApp over Malawi’s economic situation.
He allegedly criticized the president before a member of the WhatsApp group took a screenshot of his message and sent it to a politician who then reported the matter to police.
This is not the first time the country’s authorities have arrested a person for insulting a public official.
