Tens of thousands of Wagner mercenaries are believed to be fighting for Russia in Ukraine.

They belong to an organization called Wagner Group, which has been used in Russian military operations in many countries.

Who are the mercenaries of the Wagner Group?

“In fact Wagner now leads 50,000 fighters in Ukraine and has been an integral part of the Ukraine campaign,” according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

He says the organization started recruiting in large numbers last year because Russia was struggling to find people for the regular army.

About 80% of its troops in Ukraine were released from prisons, according to the US National Security Council.

Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Wagner Group is believed to have only about 5,000 fighters.

They were mostly experienced former soldiers – most of them from the elite and special forces of Russia.

Although mercenary forces are illegal in Russia, the Wagner Group registered as a company in 2022 and opened a new headquarters in St.

“It openly recruits in Russian cities, on billboards, and is mentioned in the Russian media as a patriotic organization,” says Dr. Samuel Ramani of the Royal United Services Institute.

What is the Wagner Group doing in Ukraine?

Wagner’s group was heavily involved in Russia’s efforts to capture the city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine.

The Ukrainian military claims that Wagner fighters were deployed in large numbers in ground attacks, causing many deaths.

After Russia claimed the capture of the town of Soledar, near Bakhmut, a dispute arose between its Ministry of Defense and the Wagner Group over who should get the loans.

At first, the Ministry of Defense did not mention that Wagner’s group was involved in the fighting. However, he later admitted that his mercenaries had played a “brave and selfless” role.

Where does the Wagner Group work?

Since 2015, Wagner Group mercenaries have been in Syria, fighting alongside pro-government forces and protecting oil fields.

There are also mercenaries of the Wagner Group in Libya, supporting forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar.

The Central African Republic (CAR) has invited the Wagner Group to protect diamond mines, and is believed to protect gold mines in Sudan.

The government of Mali, West Africa, is using the Wagner group against Islamic militant groups.

It is believed that Yevgeny Prigozhin earns money from the activities of the Wagner Group abroad.

The US Treasury says it is taking advantage of its presence to enrich the mining companies it owns and restrict them.

An unnamed White House spokesman told Reuters that Mr Prigozhin may want the Wagner Group to seize Bakhmut so he can control the region’s salt and gypsum mines.

What crimes did the Wagner Group allegedly commit?

In January, the former commander applied for asylum in Norway after defecting from a group of mercenaries. He claims to have witnessed war crimes in Ukraine.

Three Wagner Group mercenaries are accused by Ukrainian prosecutors of killing and torturing civilians near Kiev in April 2022, along with regular Russian soldiers.

German intelligence says Wagner mercenaries may also kill civilians in Bucha in March 2022.

The United Nations and the French government accused Wagner’s mercenaries of committing rape and robbery against civilians in the Central African Republic.

In 2020, the US military accused Wagner mercenaries of planting landmines and other explosives in and around the Libyan capital, Tripoli.
