Former Kisumu Deputy Governor Ruth Odinga was forced to flee Urudi Primary School in Nyakach constituency after a riot broke out at a polling station during the Orange Democratic Movement by-elections on Tuesday.
Ms Odinga had gone to the polling station to confirm allegations that an unidentified man was conducting a voting exercise in parallel with the polling station.
But as she was leaving the polling station, the youths fought, forcing the police to open fire several times in the air to disperse the mob.
“I was told that someone was practicing parallel at the Return of Primary School. When I went to look for him, he told me he was one of the speakers, ”Ms Odinga said.
She added: “When I left the station there was a commotion that turned violent as soon as I left.”
The situation worsened after a man accused of bribing voters at the polling station was beaten by youths.
Voting was suspended for a few minutes before more police were called in to ease tensions.
