Srichand Hinduja, the tycoon who ran Britain’s richest family, has died aged 87, a spokesman has said.

Hinduja suffered from dementia and his condition has been at the center of a family dispute that has led to legal proceedings over whether he should be taken into state care.

The eldest of the four brothers who founded the Hinduja Group, died on Wednesday, according to a family spokesperson.

He “passed away peacefully” and was “cared for” by his loved ones, the spokesman said, praising him as a “great visionary for industry and business”.

The Hindujas topped the Sunday Times Rich List in 2022 with an estimated fortune of £28.4 billion ($35.4 billion).

But a London judge said that despite the many resources at their disposal, Hinduja’s needs were “overshadowed” by a family dispute, according to court documents released in November.

The conference was founded by Parmand Hinduja’s father who ran a tea and dried fruit business in Mumbai in 1919 before moving to Iran.

The brothers took over in the 1960s and expanded the business significantly.

The sprawling Hinduja Group – led by London-based Srichand and Gopichand – has grown to include interests in power, oil and gas, banking and healthcare.

Srichand Hinduja was thrust into the British media spotlight in the late 1990s amid accusations that a senior member of Tony Blair’s government had improperly lobbied for his British citizenship.
