United Democratic Alliance (UDA) vice-president Kipruto Arap Kirwa resigned on Sunday May 29 and joined the Azimio la Umoja Kenya Resolution party.
Kirwa was introduced by Raila Odinga’s running mate, Resolution flag bearer Martha Karua. The three addressed a rally at Mayuba Stadium in Sirisia, Bungoma County.
The outgoing UDA official was one of UDA’s most experienced politicians – who served as Cherang’any MP for ten years and a Cabinet Minister for five years during President Mwai Kibaki’s first term.
The veteran politician cited the nomination of MP Mathira Rigathi Gachagua as co-candidate for Vice President William Ruto as the main reason for his departure.
He added that he was disappointed after the decision but was optimistic after his former compatriot, Karua, was elected to replace Raila.
“Mine was a trip two weeks ago last Sunday but one, Kenya First announced their nomination of Ruto’s running mate and that was a recent sign for many that there was a lack of democracy.
“The next day Raila launched Karua as his running mate and for the past 13 days I have thought about how and why I would remain on the side where democracy would be sacrificed?” He said.
The former Agriculture Minister hinted that he had contacted the Narc Kenya party leader on the evening of May 28, to inform him of his decision, which he wanted to make public at the next Declaration meeting. He also officially announced his resignation from UDA and announced his support for Raila Odinga
“Last night I called Karua and asked hee where she would be and she told me at Bungoma, I told her I would come to a public meeting to formally join the Declaration.
“From today, I, Kipruto Arap Kirwa, have resigned from the post of Vice President of UDA because democracy can be defeated in Kenya. , “he added.
