Local media reported that the suspect knew the Japanese woman that day and attacked her near the stadium’s spectator seats after attending the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

Kyodo News said the two were temporary employees associated with the Games and worked on the field before attending the practice.

The man denied the allegations, saying the woman did not deny his progress, Japan’s public broadcaster NHK said.
