Woman sentenced to one year imprisonment for leaving her two months baby.
A woman who abandoned her two months-year-old son has been jailed for one year by Bondo court.
Agnes Adhiambo appeared before Bondo Resident magistrate, Veronica Achola on Friday and was given a charge sheet of sh. 150,000 which she failed to raise and thus was escorted to Siaya women prison to begin her jail term.
The accused left her new born child under the care of her grandmother, an 80-year-old aged woman.
The lady was found guilty and sentenced to 12months imprisonment.
Agnes had given birth at home on her own without assistance but didn’t want to keep the baby. left with no choice.
It took time, before the matter was discovered. The baby named Amos at the time had suffered mild pneumonia due to the cold temperatures but quickly found and taken to Bondo hospital for treatment.
The child has since been handed over to Siaya children home and lives under the care of the County government.
The prosecution told the court that the accused had been leaving her child under the care of the elderly woman during nights and sometimes during the day for the last one month, negatively affecting the life of the child, while she went to Bar-Kowino Trading center reportedly to loiter.
Neighbors informed Chief, Joshua of the matter and he assisted in taking the child to Bondo Children Home where he is currently being monitored.
The Chief said he met Agnes at Bondo with two sex workers and brought her to Bondo police post where she was charged with the offense.
Bondo sub-county police commissioner directed the prosecution to still place the child at the Siaya Children’s remand home pending a report from the children’s department.
In mitigation, the accused pleaded for leniency.
